This paper was presented as part of a panel on Latin American Trade Ties at the XXVIII International Conference of the Latin American Studies Association in Rio. While the paper presented preliminary data and analysis on trade and investment links between India and Latin America, the presentation focused on the challenges of doing research on Latin America in India given scarcity of data and attention to the matter. Conclusions from the data presented included that policy and attention can make a difference -- with Chilean exports to India as the great sustained success story -- and that while trade and investment ties have been limited, they are growing quickly across a wide range of countries, although they remain relatively small as a percentage of both regions' trade profiles.
