Simulation and Game Development: Energy, Agricultural Supply Chain Management & Government Budget Planning

Agricultural Supply Chain: A simulation-based game built on a model of agricultural supply chains is underway in collaboration with TUD. An academic paper was presented at the 9th Wageningen International Conference on Chain and Network Management in Netherlands by one of our Dutch partners in May 2010. This mango season we did another round of fieldwork, and are in the process of analyzing this data to rework the simulation. The plan is to develop a paper game to start, and our most active Dutch partner plans to come to Bangalore to work with us further on this in the upcoming December. Once a basic game is developed, it is hoped that we can make further revisions to use to guide policymakers in appropriate policy for resolving this critical problem for rural India.

Energy Policy Games: A Dutch intern worked to develop an innovative and well-received paper game where participants play the roles of government decision makersfrom different ministries and must negotiate for funds to build additional power plants to attempt to reach Planning Commission set goals. This game highlights the tradeoffs in policy, and has been played with private sector firms active in the energy space as well as students and other academics. We hope to play it with government officials when it gets tested a bit more for Version Two.

We continue to work with our Dutch partners at TU-Delft to refine their electricity trading game. We are now adding the carbon market to the Dutch model. We will then adopt these models to the Indian context. This work is also helpful as we build general market model of modules for our analysis of various products, services and regions.

Government Budgets: Several simple games are under development which highlight the tradeoffs that policymakersmust make when formulating budgets, using both the Indian central government and Karnataka state government figures.
