Workshop on Energy Auditing

October 24, 2017

Mr. Suresh Babu B.V. and Mr. Bency Zachariah of Ottotractions, an energy auditing consultancy based in Thiruvananthapuram, conducted a one day workshop at CSTEP Bangalore on October 24, 2017. Ottotractions has provided consultancy services for over 250 projects in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, carbon emission reduction and sustainable development.

This workshop was conducted to introduce and train CSTEP researchers on energy auditing and the key equipment used for auditing. The session began with Ottotractions discussing the firm’s background, accreditations, associations, foci and projects. This initiated an interactive discussion on aspects of energy auditing. Through presentations on the energy auditing process they emphasised the importance of a holistic approach to conducting energy audits. Two detailed case studies- one on buildings and another on industry- were presented to the researchers. The measurement parameters and final recommendations for each of the projects were discussed in detail.
Few of the major energy audit equipment like power analyser, lux meter, infrared thermometer, anemometer, etc., were demonstrated to the researchers. They also highlighted the need for comprehensive policies enforcing energy efficiency, and the fact that simple interventions may induce major returns on investment and cost savings. These principles were demonstrated through a practical session analysing the power quality at CSTEP office.

Training Programme on Water Sensitive Urban Design and Planning

September 25, 2017 to September 29, 2017

The topic emphasised on urban water management through rain water harvesting and re-use of waste water. Water-Sensitive Urban Design and Planning (WSUDP) integrates the urban water cycle, water supply, wastewater, and storm-water and groundwater management with spatial and urban design. This approach contributes to sustainability and liveability, particularly when considered as a part of an overall urban strategy. The purpose of the workshop was to explore possible innovations, spanning areas of alternative approaches to water management, and show how they can be applied in cities, while taking up existing opportunities to use it for improving cities’ amenities and quality of life.

Architects, civil engineers, Ph.D. scholars, entrepreneurs, etc., from different parts of the country, participated in the training programme. The participants had great insights on the topic, which helped in an interactive learning experience. As researchers are cognizant,  urban water is a very significant part of urban infrastructure provisions and management of urban water has become a pressing issue in all cities today, it is important to explore different ways in which we can tackle this issue to make cities more sustainable. Water sensitive urban design and planning is one of the sustainable approaches.

Since CSTEP is dedicated towards providing a technology based policy approach for achieving sustainable cities, this training was very relevant to CSTEP’s objective. The training elaborated on various technologies that can be employed in case of urban water management.
