Transitioning Towards a Green Economy in Karnataka
December 06, 2014
Karnataka envisions job-oriented, inclusive economic growth through sustainable industrialisation and accelerated urbanisation. These transitions are likely to increase the demand for resources and energy significantly. The achievement of this vision may be threatened by limits on resources and an adverse impact on quality of life. To address these challenges, a green economy strategy that can enable the state to meet the allied developmental imperatives of economic growth along with natural resource and environmental sustainability is presented. This report focuses on sectors that account for all of the state’s energy requirement and over 70% of its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Using a multicriteria analysis, assessment of the current policy landscape and consultation with a wide set of stakeholders, this report lays out key green growth opportunities for the state. This study also presents policy recommendations and identifies specific research studies that could inform such an action plan.
