Fast Breeder Reactors (FBRs) are expected to play a major role in India’s power programme and help utilise the country’s large thorium (Th) reserves. Three decades of operation and maintenance of the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) with no serious problems has provided confidence to pursue the FBR programme. Yet, there are concerns among the public regarding the safety, proliferation and economic viability of FBRs. This study examines the economic viability of FBRs.
